When is it worth getting help with technical writing?

I enjoy learning new technology, but explaining technical ideas in simple words is much harder than I expected. I have heard people say they hire technical content writer when they need clear guides or documents, and it made me curious. How do you know when to keep improving your own writing and when to ask for expert help? What would you suggest for someone just starting out?
