How do you know your writing needs improvement?

I sometimes read my own content and feel it could be much better, but I cannot always tell what is missing. A few friends mentioned hire a website content writer when they wanted fresh ideas, and it made me think about getting feedback. How do you check if your writing is clear enough? Do you ask others to read it or use another method?
